The largest LED streetlight project in the west was put into operation last night in Chengdu High-tech Zone (Western District). Thirteen streets within 28 square kilometers neatly lit up the LED street lights of white flowers, totaling 1,300 miles.

The high-tech zone revealed that the total cost of the construction of these street lamps reached 24 million yuan, 55% more energy than ordinary high-pressure sodium lamps. As a pilot city for the “Ten Cities and Ten Thousands” semiconductor lighting project in China, Chengdu has taken the lead in realizing large-scale application of LEDs. On the towering poles, bright LED lights illuminate instantly, attracting many passers-by to stop. Due to the high cost of LED street lamps, the cost of a 150-watt LED street lamp is equivalent to the cost of a 40-inch flat-panel TV. The urban management department reminds the public to cherish these street lights. It is reported that from this year to 2011, Chengdu will have 20,000 LED street lights put into use.
