Strathclyde strips mLED company for miniature LED light source

"LEDs Technology" reported: Strathclyde University got an investment opportunity to spin off a mLED company. The new company will focus on next-generation light source technologies that can create billions of dollars in applications, including neuroscience, microscopy and communications. Braveheart Investment Group is responsible for the £150,000 investment through the injection of SIF and Alpha EIS Fund; Scottish Enterprise's Scottish Seed Fund is also involved.

The mLED is designed for micro-light-emitting diodes (microLEDs) that integrate a dense array of thousands of miniature light-emitting diodes into a compact package. Unlike other microdisplay technologies, the microLED mask is programmable, eliminating the need for a large number of peripheral electronics such as optics and conversion matrices to adjust the illumination mode, making microLEDs more compact and efficient.

Dr. Jim Bonar, CEO of mLED, said that only a few companies around the world recognize this technology, including its potential for business opportunities and performance in the field. For example, in the life sciences market such as neuroscience, the communication market for pico projectors, printing, microscopes, and next-generation general lighting, these applications require power density, versatility, and limited size. To this end, mLED is building a compact, flexible, reliable and versatile technology platform.

Each microLED has enough light output to affect other materials, enabling active illumination and exciting cells. In addition, they also have a fast enough conversion speed to communicate with cells or to study cells through fluorescence lifetime imaging. At present, mLED can sell some microLED demonstration boards to help developers figure out whether micro LEDs are suitable for the above new applications.
