Rational view of LED light radiation safety issues

June 13, 2023
The issue of photobiosafety has been paid much attention to it internationally for a long time. From the publication of papers, there are actually related researches from the 40s, 60s, and 80s, and the organization that pays close attention to this issue is IPRA ( The International Radiation Protection Association) and the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection), established in 1992 by a committee of 14 independent scientists, specialize in addressing the important issues that exposure to non-ionizing radiation can adversely affect human health. After that, he shared the development process of CIES009/E:2002 (photobiosafety of lamps and lamp systems), which is most closely related to this issue. He pointed out that three people contributed to the development of CIES009/E:2002. They are WernerHorak, an expert from Siemens in Germany, David Sliney, an expert in the US Army Health and Prevention Research Center, and Rolf Bergman, the former head of the Photometric Testing Laboratory at GE.
As for the origin of the LED blue light problem, he pointed out that photobiosafety was not primarily aimed at blue light at first, but mainly for invisible ultraviolet and infrared rays. Because it can not be seen by the human eye, the hidden danger of injury is large, so the main reason is that the ultraviolet light in the fluorescent lamp causes harm to the human body. From the spectrogram, the current white LED technology route has blue spectral peaks and LEDs have no visible light radiation. Therefore, the external hype of LEDs can only be started from blue light, thus causing the outside world. The LED blue light is transmitted.
For the hazards caused by light, it is very important to distinguish between what will cause harm to the skin and which will cause harm to the eyes. Because the eyes are looking, especially for visible light, the human eye has important characteristics to avoid, and the skin may be exposed to light without knowing it. In addition, he also explained the classification of light radiation (photobio) safety: (RG0) non-hazard (10000s, no over 2.8 hours) no optical hazards, such as frosted incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps; (RG1) Hazard (low risk) (not exceeded within 100s) is safe for most applications, such as ordinary flashlight with battery; (RG2) Category 2 hazard (moderate hazard) (no aversive reaction within 0.25s) Sun (< 1s), the sun is at the high limit of Category 2 hazard, very close to 3 categories; (RG3) Category 3 hazard (highly dangerous) (<0.25s) Even short-term exposure can cause harm.
International standards generally represent the international level and development direction. We must attach great importance to it, but we should not be too superstitious and blindly obedient, and continue to speculate on it. The development of international standards requires Stackholders, and we must actively participate. In addition, it is necessary to clarify the relationship between light radiation hazards and health lighting, the relationship between light radiation hazards and photobiological effects. Photobiosafety issues also really need to be given special attention, but the development of mandatory standards must be particularly cautious, and do not engage in "no need."
